Rev'd Lynda McMinn to be inducted as our new Vicar
Rev'd Lynda will be inducted on Friday 17th September at 8pm in St John's Sorrento by our Regional Bishop Paul White.
Rev'd Lynda has been Archdeacon of Essendon and Vicar of Holy Trinity Williamstown. She is married with children and young grandchildren. Our Incumbency Committee tell us she has a vision which marries well with our own Vision and Mission Action Plan. To discover more about her and to read her sermons visit the Holy Trinity website http://www.holytrinitywilliamstown.org.au
While waiting for a new Vicar we have been blessed by the ministry of Fr John Spring as locum with assistance from Peninsula Deacon, Rev'd Christine Barren and our Associate Priests, Rev'd John Goldsworthy and Rev'd Ray Kenny. Fr John's last Sunday with us will be 11th September and we are most grateful for all his ministry has offered us.
The Appeal was launched by Dorothy Houghton M.B.E., "one of our living treasures",
on 13 April with an address by Bishop Paul White and lively
entertainment by Tania de Jong and members of the famous "Pot Pouri"
musical group.
This was a joyful celebration of our long and
important history and a challenge to preserve it for future
generations.
Bishop Paul spoke of the importance of preserving our churches for the future; the fabric, the stones and buildings, but also of us, the people, as living stones.
Dorothy shared some recollections of her 63 year association with St John's and enumerated various things which make this a church of national importance:
Victoria's first worship service held at Sullivan Bay Sorrento in 1803 The 20th Century Martyrs' Chapel, The Prince Consort window, Leading public figures who worshiped here, including former Prime Minister Harold Holt The continuing significance of St John's for the community both here and further afield.
St John’s Church stands as a
symbol of our faith. It was built in 1874 as an act of
faith. It has been looked after by
generations as an act of faith. It is an icon to our local
community and far afield. It is precious in its provision
of all services, And for baptisms weddings and
funerals. It is a centre for faith and
spirituality. It needs our faith and love to
restore it for future generations.
St John’s is in urgent need of a new slate roof and repairs to
stonework, drainage and to a historically significant stained glass window
